When I was a child my momma gave me a daily dose of Blackstrap Molasses, delivered by a thick, black tablespoonful of bittersweet goo. Touted as a natural nutritional supplement, molasses is a by-product of refining sugarcane or sugar beets into sugar. Needless to say, it was the least favorite part of my childhood bedtime routine.
Now that I’m older and wiser I’ve come to realize the fine qualities of this tarry black substance, especially its use in boosting the potency and adding flavor to beer. It’s no wonder I have become fond of the flavors in Founders Curmudgeon Old Ale which is brewed with molasses and aged in oak barrels.
The award-winning Curmudgeon fills the glass with a reddish-bronze color. Even after a strong pour I was only able to rustle up a thin head, which disappeared quickly. Scents of fruit or wine, hints of toffee, and bourbon essences complement an oaky base. My nose can sense the booziness to come.
The taste of Curmudgeon is faceted with complexities. Layers of whiskey, vanilla, and fruit with a hint of spice tempt the taste buds while the ever-present bittersweet molasses languishes on the breath. Curmudgeon has a medium body and strong carbonation with a bit of alcohol burn amongst the caramel. The woody character is evident from the oak aging and there’s enough bitterness to balance out the malt.
Reminiscent of a Scotch Ale, Founders Curmudgeon is a highly enjoyable brew that is meant to be savored. The high alcohol content packs a wallop. It’s a bonus that it’s brewed with the nutrient-rich superfood molasses which is high in vitamin B6, calcium, magnesium, iron, and potassium. To your health!
Available through June (if you can find it). Buy some extra and stow them in the cellar for later.
