Filtered pale wheat ale
Lagunitas Brewing Co. Petaluma, California
Founded 1993

Lagunitas sits as the number five craft brewer in the US, with the brewery’s name coming from the city where they founded. Quickly outgrowing their capacity, they moved to their current location in Petaluma. One of the early craft beer pioneers, Lagunitas brews to a higher calling and produces exemplary beer at a reasonable price.

A big vat of controversy surrounds this brew because of its categorization as a wheat beer while its flavors command a very hoppy IPA presence. One thing we can all agree on is that Little Sumpin’ Ale brings us the best of both worlds. It’s a very smart beer bubbling with character and strength. Originally only a summer release, Little Sumpin’ Ale is now available year round for our enjoyment.

Upon first pour, I am greeted by a lovely orange-ish, hazy hue and a head that releases a complex variety of subtle essences. The Cascade, Chinook, and Centennial hops initially combine in a burst of smoked grapefruit aroma that fragments into bits of peaches, rose petals, evergreen, and pepper.

A quaff of Lagunitas Little Sumpin’ Ale brings about a whole new sensory experience. Filtered, but not quite clear, this ale starts out with floral notes and ends bitterly. The malt is subtle, overwhelmed by the hop and there’s lots of appeal in the hints of orange. This is a beer that knows what I want. Subsequent sips transform from sweet and doughy to piney mango, hiding any alcohol taste in this potent 7.5% ABV ale.

The glass continues to beckon me as bright carbonation dances from bottom to top, releasing effervescent hopness. Mouth-feel is silky and crisp. As the glass empties layers of thick lacing are icing on the cake. This ale is alive and here to satisfy—a brew you can take a bite out of. I can’t say enough about the unique flavors in this brew and with outstanding reviews on Beer Advocate I recommend you should do yourself a favor and get A Little Sumpin’ for your drinking pleasure. It’s good stuff!
